How to use Excel to CSV

  1. 1
Choose the Excel file (XLSX) you want to convert to CSV, or drag it into the upload area.
  2. 2
Pick a delimiter — comma is standard, or tab if the system you're importing into expects TSV.
  3. 3
Click Save as CSV, check the row/column count and preview, then download the CSV file.

When to use this

  • Great for exporting an Excel sheet as a plain CSV to bulk-import into a database or another system.
  • Useful for producing a UTF-8 (with BOM) CSV that opens correctly in Excel without showing garbled accented characters.
  • Handy for stripping a large, heavily formatted workbook down to plain text data for lightweight storage or sharing.

Frequently asked questions

If my Excel file has multiple sheets, do they all get saved?

CSV format only supports a single sheet, so only the data in the first sheet of your Excel file is converted and saved.

Will names with accented letters (José, Zoë) show up correctly when reopened?

Yes — the file is saved with a UTF-8 BOM marker at the start, so accented characters display correctly whether it's opened in Excel, a text editor, or another import tool.

Does my file really never get sent to a server?

Correct — LocalSheet does all its processing inside your own web browser. Your file data never travels over the network to anywhere. It even works with your internet connection turned off.

Is there a limit on file size or number of files?

For browser performance and stability, we support files totaling up to 10MB. Merging files supports up to 20 files at once.

Is there a fee, or do I need to log in?

No. Every LocalSheet tool is completely free, with no account and no login required.
