How to use Split & Join Columns

  1. 1
Choose the Excel/CSV file with the column you want to split or join, or drop it into the upload area.
  2. 2
Pick Split or Join — for splitting, choose the column and delimiter; for joining, choose the columns and the character to insert between them.
  3. 3
Click Apply, check the processed row count and the new column(s) in the preview, then download the result.

When to use this

  • Great for splitting a full name into separate first- and last-name columns for another system's import fields.
  • Useful for splitting a one-line address into city, state, and ZIP code columns for sorting or mapping.
  • Handy for joining separate first- and last-name columns back into one full-name column when another system expects a single field.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if splitting produces a different number of parts per row?

The number of new columns is based on the row that splits into the most parts. Rows that split into fewer parts just get blank values in the extra columns — that's expected and safe.

Does the original column disappear?

No — the original column stays exactly as it was, and the split or joined result is added as new column(s) afterward. Delete the original column yourself in Excel if you no longer need it.

Does my file really never get sent to a server?

Correct — LocalSheet does all its processing inside your own web browser. Your file data never travels over the network to anywhere. It even works with your internet connection turned off.

Is there a limit on file size or number of files?

For browser performance and stability, we support files totaling up to 10MB. Merging files supports up to 20 files at once.

Is there a fee, or do I need to log in?

No. Every LocalSheet tool is completely free, with no account and no login required.
